Personalised purchase experience provider Nosto wanted to integrate its application to different e-commerce platforms in order to grow its business. Digia implemented the add-ons that integrate Nosto’s application to seven different online shop platforms.

Building strong customer relationships in the impersonal online environment is without a doubt one of the greatest challenges faced by e-commerce. Providing a custom experience not only serves the customer, but also increases the profits of merchants by improving the conversion rate and customer loyalty and increasing the average order value. All retailers understand the value of personalisation, but the traditional solutions have only been available to large online retailers due to their high price and the resources required by their implementation.

Nosto is a marketing service through which online retailers can offer personalised purchase experiences to their customers. The service is already used by more than 10,000 online shops in over one hundred countries. Nosto was established in 2011 to give all online retailers the opportunity to offer more enjoyable shopping experiences to their customers. Nosto’s pricing is based directly on the benefit achieved: if the service does not bring extra income to the retailer, it will also cost nothing. The service was launched globally in 2014.

Development in line with strategy

In 2012, Nosto was in a hurry to move the development of its pilot-stage application forward. They decided that the most sensible thing for the streamlining of internal development processes would be to focus on the company’s own core competence, i.e. the development of the application’s core features.

At the same time, Nosto understood that, in order to realise the company’s strategy, it was essential to integrate the application with various e-commerce platforms, many of which have been implemented with PHP, while Nosto’s application is Java-based.

So Nosto contacted Digia, which jumped on board during the service’s beta. Digia was charged with implementing the add-ons that integrate Nosto’s application to seven different online shop platforms.

Growth-enabling integrations

Digia brought two senior developers to the project, both experts in back-end development and integrations.

In the first phase, we reviewed the e-commerce platforms considered for integration, their user numbers in Nosto’s principal markets now and in the future, and the technological viability, or cost-benefit ratio, of the integration. For example, all closed-source systems were excluded because their implementation would be too expensive in proportion to the benefits achieved.

In the second phase, the add-ons or plugins that enabled the integrations were implemented for seven different systems: Magento, Drupal Commerce, PrestaShop, WordPress e-Commerce, WooCommerce, VirtueMart and Ubercart.

The precisely scheduled project was a great success in every respect: the work was completed on schedule in six months, and the result was exactly according to specifications. The plugins implemented by Digia have played a major role in Nosto’s growth strategy and been adopted by hundreds of online shops around the world.
