Newsec needed to improve the utilisation rate of the rental flats managed by the company. For this, they needed an easy-to-use tool with which tenants could apply for available flats. Thanks to its diverse expertise and capacity for innovation, Digia was chosen to implement the Kodisto.fi project.
I like Digia’s agile, proactive and customer-oriented operating method. I also appreciate the team’s commitment to the project and the fact that they used modern, digital project management tools. The result is extremely flexible, scalable and modifiable.
Tomi Ventovuori, Executive Vice President, Newsec Asset Management Oy
Newsec has provided real estate sales and purchases counselling, evaluations and analysis, office brokerage and real estate and office management services in Finland for 25 years. Newsec serves its customers everywhere in Finland with 200 experts, operating in Tampere, Oulu, Turku, Hämeenlinna and Jyväskylä in addition to the Capital Region.
Newsec needed to improve the utilisation rate of the rental flats managed by the company. For this, they needed an easy-to-use tool with which tenants could apply for available flats.
The objective of the Kodisto.fi project was to bring the presentation of flats to the new decade, with a heavy emphasis on the user experience, particularly in the mobile channel. The customer wanted the result to be better than existing rental brokerage services, whose user experience was not the best, especially on mobile. Airbnb was considered the reference in mobile usability.
“We selected Digia to implement the project, as the company was able to define the project’s content and pricing in advance and had some ideas of its own for the implementation. We also appreciated the diverse expertise in their organisation. Another thing tipping the scales was that Newsec would own the results of the project, enabling further development of the service by a different partner if necessary”, says Tomi Ventovuori, Executive Vice President of Newsec Asset Management Oy.
Newsec was simultaneously developing a rental flat management back-end system with another service provider and intended to integrate the system with the Kodisto.fi marketplace. The goal of the back-end system’s development and integration was to make the work of Newsec’s rent management more efficient.
In the project, Digia was responsible for concept, user interface and visual design and the technical implementation of the service. The project included the implementation of software using microservice architecture, with the tried and true Laravel Lumen as the back-end, a React application framework as the front-end and ElasticSearch as the search engine.
In order to improve the user experience, the search was simplified as much as possible and all unnecessary components were cut. As a special feature, we implemented a Tinder-type like functionality, through which the service learns what type of flats the user prefers. With a view to Newsec’s customers, i.e. the flat owners, a dynamic pricing element based on the flat’s popularity and attractiveness was added to the service, enabling the landlords to get the best rent possible for their properties.
For different types of landlords, we also added the option to only present your own flats with your own visual design. The service’s other features include multi-language support, diverse search functions and a customised admin side with its own search function and the possibility to add special notifications for properties on the front end, such as “offer”, “property being shown” and “different price”.
“I like Digia’s agile, proactive and customer-oriented operating method. I also appreciate the team’s commitment to the project and the fact that they used modern, digital project management tools. We are happy that the service was completed on schedule. The result is extremely flexible, scalable and modifiable. One of the most successful features of the service is that you can customise the layout for different customers”, Tomi Ventovuori says.
”I believe that the Kodisto.fi service can be used in our business in ways we are not even aware of yet”, Vice President Risto Mustaniemi continues.
