Dynamic operating models and transparent processes 

In 2007, Itella Logistics kicked off a project to develop its transport operations in Finland. The aim was to boost the profitability of domestic transport. In addition, operating models were to become more dynamic and processes more transparent. Through a technology tendering round, Itella Logistics discovered a vertical solution operating in the Microsoft Dynamics AX ERP environment. This had been designed for the transport logistics industry by Crealogix, a Swiss company. Having assured itself of the system’s suitability, Itella Logistics decided to acquire it. Although Crealogix did not have a Finnish distributor, Digia realised that it was a good addition to their already strong logistics solutions offering. Itella was convinced by Digia's industry expertise and investment in the Crealogix vertical solution. During the first phase, the system was deployed in Itella’s domestic freight service.

This solution will enable us to achieve our targets and bring transparency to shipment status," says Tommi Nylander, Director of ITC, Itella Logistics Finland. "We look forward to greater operational efficiency over the coming years. This will happen after the next phase, once all domestic shipments are covered by the system."

Three cooks make a better broth

Itella Logistics is impressed by Crealogix software’s versatility. A wide range of properties and functionality means that a low amount of customisation is needed. Itella, Digia and Crealogix cooperate through a multivendor model, which has succeeded well in implementing the software for Itella. The three partners had to adjust this vertical solution to Itella Logistics’ various service offerings. Digia contributed its strong expertise in the logistics industry and in the management of electronic supply chains. Its experience of turnkey integration deliveries also proved valuable.

"So-called agile methods were used extensively in the project. These were a huge help, especially in the initial stages, " Nylander explains. "This enabled rapid progress in the pilot project, with solutions migrating to production on schedule. Digia is also bringing its in-depth knowledge of mobile systems to the project – the Digia Oiko.fi -service is being used to manage on-road personnel in a pilot project for domestic freight services. While on the road, drivers are directly connected to the system via smart phones."

"We believe that through this project and the Crealogix solution, Digia has an opportunity to increase its customer base in the logistics industry. Then, Digia’s growing expertise in the sector will also benefit us."
