Digia Plc receives a patent for a memory and signal method for redistributing a software application between mobile terminals and a mobile terminal

The patented method enables cost-effective distribution of the digital rights management enabled applications from user to user which will benefit the software developers as well as the operators.
Received patent describes a method for redistributing software installed to a mobile phone to another phones thus enabling super distribution of software between the users. The method utilises information stored to a phone for uninstalling the software to recreate an installation package which can be sent to other users.

Kai Tulonen, CTO, SYSOPENDIGIA Plc says: "The new needs set by the distributed and decentralised management of mobile devices is being handled by SYSOPENDIGIA's technology. Application super distribution is one example of the device management technologies we are offering. Efficient management of the mobile devices on private and enterprise world will bring the benefits of a true mobility," Tulonen continues.

The invention is based on the idea that installation information stored during the installation is utilised in assembling the files of the software product for redistribution. The invention provides several advantages: The memory usage in the mobile terminal is optimised - this invention supports various ways to implement the data transfer between the mobile terminals in a super distribution situation.

Current software installation systems, for example the ones in Microsoft Windows or Symbian operating systems, consider only installation and un-installation of software applications; they do not provide functionality for redistributing software applications nor for recreating an installation file from installed software applications. Redistribution of software applications that have been installed in a mobile terminal would be very desirable. Enabling such redistribution is important for example in a situation where users themselves are supposed to distribute software applications to their friends; i.e. to facilitate 'software super distribution'. The software super distribution is considered to be an effective and economical way of distributing software applications, especially if free local communication can be utilised, but only in situations where the unauthorised use of software applications can be prevented.
